Distribution & platforms

    Podcast Synchronization

Podcast synchronization is the use of music inside a podcast episode — intro theme, transitions, underscore beds and advertising segments. Podcasts fall between formats: episodes are downloaded, streamed, syndicated across dozens of platforms and increasingly published as video, so a licence written for one distribution model rarely covers the whole footprint.

    In practice

A podcast licence must cover downloads as well as streams, unlimited episodes rather than a fixed number, syndication to every platform the feed reaches, the video version on YouTube, and monetisation including dynamically inserted advertising. The back catalogue is the pressure point: a theme licensed for one year sits inside every episode ever published, and episodes do not disappear when the licence expires. Shows that change theme music after a rights lapse have to re-edit or unpublish an archive.

    How SoniBuyout® handles it

A theme you own stays legal for the life of the archive. No renewal to track against hundreds of episodes, no platform excluded, and the video version, the ad reads and the syndicated feeds are all covered by the same fact: the music is yours.

    Real questions

Do I need a new licence for a video version of my podcast?

Under most audio-only licences, yes — pairing the audio with picture is a synchronisation use. Check that the licence names video platforms explicitly.

What happens to old episodes if my music licence expires?

Unless the licence covers content published during the term in perpetuity, the archive becomes unlicensed. Re-editing hundreds of episodes is the alternative to owning the theme.
