Metadata Embedding
Metadata embedding is the practice of writing descriptive and rights information inside the audio file itself — ID3 tags in MP3, the BWF broadcast extension in WAV, iXML in production audio — rather than keeping it in a spreadsheet beside it. It travels with the file through every hand-off.
In practice
Useful fields include title, composer, owner, copyright notice, ISRC where one exists, BPM and key for editors, and timecode for broadcast WAV. In an asset library of hundreds of tracks, embedded metadata is what stops a file from becoming an anonymous WAV nobody can clear two years later. It also matters for platform matching: descriptive tags help internal search, while rights fields give an auditor an immediate answer about provenance. Metadata does not itself create rights — it documents them.

Real questions
Does embedded metadata prove ownership?
No. It documents a claim and is easily edited. Proof comes from the signed assignment agreement and, where available, a verifiable certificate.
Should buyout tracks have an ISRC?
Only if you intend to distribute them commercially as recordings. For internal, advertising or venue use an ISRC is unnecessary, and its absence keeps the track outside industry reporting systems.
